4 easy ways to get involved in your community

LINKEDINCOMMENTMORE
When I moved to Des Moines, I was excited for everything it had to offer. From the fun downtown atmosphere, other young professionals, big corporations, small businesses and especially my favorite: a great craft beer scene. What I started to realize as I got more involved, is that we are also living in a city that cares so deeply about the community and the people within it. I was instantly hooked and wanted to get involved.
So today, I share with you my top four suggestions on how to get involved:

Find a community mentor.

This was one of the best things that I could have done for myself. I recommend finding someone who has been actively involved in the community for quite some time, as well as someone who knows you. When I met with my community mentor the first time, he recommended organizations based on my interests and my volunteering history. A mentor can help point you in the direction of different organizations that might be of interest to you.

Join an organization that supports volunteering.

Here is my Young Professionals Connection plug. YPC has given me the opportunity to take part in volunteer opportunities within the Des Moines community every month. It has opened my eyes to new community issues and events that I was not aware of. There are many other professional organizations in Des Moines that also offer similar opportunities.

Inquire about a company VTO policy.

Volunteer Time Off  allows employees to get involved in the community during business hours without taking their personal vacation time. A quick Google search of “Volunteer Time Off Des Moines” shows that there are more than 15 organizations in the Des Moines area that offer this perk. How incredible is that?
Several organizations here in Des Moines are actively encouraging employees to get involved in the community around them. If your organization does not have a VTO policy, I recommend reaching out to a manager or supervisor. They may be open to the idea on an individual basis or even starting it companywide.

Find something that fits your passions.

There are so many exceptional organizations and causes out there, and great resources to help narrow it down for you.
